Hi y’all! So my active date for short term disability through Aflac started on 10/1/23. I got pregnant at the end of that month and my EDD is 8/124, which is EXACTLY 10 months from my start date. They have 10 month rule with pregnancy to make sure that you are not pregnant before signing up. Well… I’m a STM and had to have an emergency c-section with my last pregnancy, so I will be a scheduled c-section this time at 39 weeks. This will put me 1 week before my 10 month period is up. I am a NICU nurse and will absolutely not vbac knowing and seeing the risks. Even if I schedule my c-section for August 1st, I went into labor at 39 weeks with my last, so chances of me making it to 40 weeks are slim. In the fine print it says that “complications of pregnancy before the 10 months will be considered sickness” and then it says further specifies more about complications and premature labor, but I’m having trouble figuring out what I can use.. has anyone been through this or have advice that could help a sister out? I cannot afford to take another unpaid maternity leave and just am panicking SO hard right now!! I attached the pics from the policy!

I would call your Aflac rep. They should be able to go through the situations with you.

@tsdearment,
that makes me so mad. Unfortunately I have my policy from ages ago and never upped the coverage when my income went up. Which wouldn’t have been a problem until we bought a house in 2022 and now the payment only covers a month of the mortgage. I couldn’t increase it for 12 months because I had a claim in Dec 2022. And by Dec 2023 I was pregnant. The increase would give me an extra $3000ish. And it will cover things like pre-eclampsia. But since I’ll have a claim when baby comes, I definitely want to increase it now otherwise I have to wait another 12 months.
This is reminding me to check in with my guy to make sure it’s processed.

Same boat. We are due 8/10 which is a Saturday. I will have a scheduled C-section at 39 weeks due to thyroid and other health issues. 39 weeks is obviously as Saturday as well. Our hospital does not schedule surgeries on the weekend. So we are looking the week of 8/5. We can collect on our policy 8/4. Like our last baby this baby is measuring large and my water broke at 38w6d last time. We shall see.

@Mama2631,
ugh.. fingers crossed for you sis!! I know there’s no way I’m going to be able to hold this baby in until 40 weeks. Basically the only complication that is covered is preeclampsia.

Since your local person sounded useless, I would just call a general Aflac number and talk to them
I found some general info on Aflac short term online and it specifically says you can’t get coverage if it hasn’t been active for 10 months before the event/birth

Check with Aflac directly about the \"complications of pregnancy\" clause since your C-section is scheduled before 10 months. They can clarify coverage for your situation.

You should definitely clarify with Aflac, but as written, if you have your baby before 8/1 you cannot collect. That really sucks. I would schedule your c-section for 8/1 with the chance that you’ll make it but otherwise it seems you’re out of luck :/

If this is an individual policy, or a fully insured policy through your employer, you can complain to your state department of insurance about the rep's statements to you. Sometimes even if the insurance company hasn't done anything wrong, they'll make one time exceptions just to resolve a complaint.
